Learn English and Play Golf

I have been in the USA for 4 years. When I came here, many Koreans recommended I do two things: learning English and playing golf. Because we can learn it and play it in an efficient way, and the price is more appropriate than in Korea. (It seems like eating fruits and vegetables in season.)

So I decided to learn English ASAP!

At first I joined an adult ESL class at Livonia Public School during fall semester in 2017. If you want to find an ESL Public School near you, search google “ESL near me”.

If you join a Community Public School, there are many benefits. For instance you can meet friends from various countries and have access to a systematic education system (with affordable tuition).

Second, I applied for free tutoring at Oakland Literacy Council by online; there was a waiting period of about 10 months. Finally I was matched with my tutor, Phyllis on the first week of September in 2019. By talking with a native speaker one-on-one, I can explain my thoughts in detail in English and my English listening  ability has improved greatly. Also, the fear of meeting native speakers is being eliminated.

Third, I have joined ESL book clubs. Through these, I could understand American cultures and American expressions in English books and I could also listen to the opinions of friends from various countries of the book club. Most local libraries have ESL book clubs. You can find a book club easily.

Also, I now have an English name that I like to use…. It is Grace (Jiyeon).

  4. Wow Grace, you are an inspiration! If you have made as much progress with your golf as you have with learning the English language you should be playing professionally by now. You really express yourself well. I love to read and enjoy book groups. I appreciate hearing about what you are learning by reading English books. It must be wonderful to share them with individuals from different cultures. Good for you!
